The easy way to look at the difference between the two tactics is in their sustainability.
With SEO being a longer term strategy which takes a significant amount of time to get running, but lasts far beyond the time it takes to set up – it is by far the more sustainable choice. Add into that the lower cost when considering the time period the investment runs for.
AdWords on the other hand, is almost like renting your place in the search results. It is something that can be run for an extremely long time, but as more and more businesses have jumped on board, the cost-per-click has risen for the vast majority of keywords. Nonetheless, it is an avenue of growth that provides immediate results.
At the end of the day though, the choice is all about what is best for your business in its current situation. A company about to start what should be their busiest season the year, but who don’t have many leads, are probably best suited to target Adwords right of the bat. Whereas if I know I am in the down season and am just preparing for next year, I have the chance to go all in with SEO for 12 months and wait for the results.
There is no solution that is always the best choice, instead, it is all about looking at what your business needs – and matching your strategy to that. At the end of the day, you can’t make a terrible decision. Whatever you target, results should come, it is just about choosing what is best and consequently receiving the best results.
