Top 6 Tips For Magento SEO

by | Aug 9, 2018 | e-Commerce

If you’re like other ecommerce business owners, one of your top priorities is to continuously attract customers through search engines.

Only few things can be more fulfilling than an online store that generates massive traffic and sales all because its product pages are ranked prominently in search results for their respective target keywords. And with Magento, you’re already on the path to achieving that.

While Magento offers tons of benefits, one of its biggest upsides is its default SEO-friendliness. So, you really don’t have to do much to enhance your store’s chances of generating organic traffic.

Here are six of the most effective tips in order to implement SEO for your Magento store.

1. Do Keyword Research

Your first most important step towards building an online store that drive massive organic traffic is in-depth keyword research. That involves finding out the exact queries that potential buyers are using to search the web for the products you’re selling on your store. This will help you understand how to strategically structure your store’s pages for best results.

You’d be better off with highly targeted phrases containing three or more words (popularly called long tail keywords), since consumers using these queries know exactly what they are looking for, and pages optimised for these keywords are more likely to convert better than those optimised for less specific keywords.

Your best sources of lucrative long tail keywords are tools that can extract them from search engines and that can catch spy of them from competitor sites.

2. Use SEO-Friendly URLs

By default, URLs in Magento include a product or category code as well as the phrase, “index.php”. Leaving these intact can dilute the SEO power of your URLs. So, your best bet is to make your URLs more SEO-friendly by removing these unnecessary extras.

To clean up your URLs, navigate to the Search Engine Optimisation configuration module. Then remove the product or category codes by setting Add Store Code to “No”. And to clear “index.php” off your URLs, set Server URL Rewrites to “Yes”. With these done, you’d be left with a cleaner URL structure that search engines would love.

3. Optimise Titles and Descriptions

Magento’s samples for product title and description are not SEO-friendly, just like the default site title and description. So, you need to edit them and include keyword-rich titles and descriptions, instead. Product pages on your store should have unique titles and descriptions that contain each page’s target keywords.

One rule is to put each page’s target keyword near the beginning of its title as much as possible. This helps search engines to realize the keyword more easily. The same applies to category pages. Also ensure that your descriptions are keyword-rich and clear enough to attract clicks.

4. Make Product Pages Content-Rich

One common mistake on Magento-based e-commerce stores is near-empty product pages. Just the product name, image, price, and the “Add to Cart” button. Pages like that aren’t good for SEO. If you really want to be generously rewarded with rankings and traffic by the search engines, add some nice details to each product or category page.

Now, you don’t have to craft an epistle for each page. All you need is a detailed, yet brief description of the product, and some other information that potential buyers would love to know about it. And don’t forget to add your target keywords and their variations within the content.

5. Eliminate Duplicate Content

Duplicate content results when the same product and its details are shown on multiple pages on your store. By default, Magento has been designed to make this mistake. For example, the content on your product page will be replicated on your category page and other specific pages. And if you don’t correct this, you’ll have a hard time trying to rank your pages in search results because Google hates sites with duplicate content.

To eliminate duplicate content on your online store, go to the Search Engine Optimisation configuration module and set Canonical Link Meta Tags for Products and Categories to Yes.

6. Build Relevant Backlinks

Making SEO-friendly modifications on your site is just one part. The other part—which is far more important—involves building backlinks to your ecommerce store. Backlinks are among the most important SEO ranking factors. The more of them you can get from quality pages and sites closely related to your store, the brighter your chances of attaining top rankings for your target keywords.

Now, building good quality links is tough. And it takes a lot of time and effort. Most online store owners prefer to outsource this aspect of SEO to reputable professionals. If you can afford the cost, this is actually better.

By implementing these six tips on your online store, you’ll be able to drive your product pages to the top ranks in search results, generate good traffic, and ultimately record massive sales and profits.
